Chapter 8:

Rather than use his phone to call a rideshare, Randell did the unthinkable. He flagged down a taxi for the trip to the waterfront. This time of day, the surface traffic was light. The ride would be quicker in a cab than by the MBTA.

The phone’s attack frightened the hell out of him. Technology had always been his friend. So many things he couldn’t do without the cell he still carried in his pocket. If such a ubiquitous appliance had been weaponized… the world was about to be thrown back into the Stone Age. What if the whole of the internet was infected? Randell doubted virus software would kill this thing.

The ferry ride across Boston Harbor was pleasant. As a student, he’s never taken the time to head out on the bay. Too much of his time was spent studying. He never even walked the Freedom Trail. Some friends forced him to stand in line long enough to tour Old Iron Sides. There was so much history in the city, but Randell always found himself more concerned with the future, specifically his future, to worry about the past. Now he saw the future of the world in jeopardy. He made this trip as much for Kennedy as he did for himself.

Standing on Spectacle Island, the Boston skyline was amazing. He was sure it would be more impressive at night. Pity he didn’t have time to sightsee. This might be a place for a romantic date… if I ever had dates.

The trashed chunk-of-magic, enhanced cell phone held tight in his outstretched hand, he walked along the park’s path. For some reason, he half expected to fall through some invisible crack, deep to the center of the earth. Kennedy forgot to explain what the entrance to the land of the Gnomes might look like. His only experiences with Fae were his student friends, all members of the outcasts living among the humans.

He didn’t know what to expect, but nothing happened. “Shit,” he cursed.

The island wasn’t that large. Where could the Gnomes be hiding the entrance? He spun around, searching for some unseen answer.

Clueless, he kept going. Following the path around the circumference of the island, he stopped when a voice called out from behind him, “What ya got there, sonny?”

He turned, and sitting on a bench was an old man. Overdressed, as if from the sixties. Randell had just walked past that bench. He wasn’t blind. No one sat there when he passed it seconds earlier. Maybe this is a Gnome. More likely it’s just an old man.

“I got some junk I’m looking to recycle.” Randell took a few tentative steps back to the bench.

Bushy eyebrows played peekaboo from under the old man’s plaid flat hat. “Won’t do you any good. There was a time all this was dump… They took that away from me. They turned it all this nasty shade of green.”

Something didn’t sit well. “I’m sorry… who are you?” Randell stopped. The hair on the back of his neck stood on end.
